It took most of a year before I had something I was satisfied with and it was published by small-press publisher Electric Pentacle Press and later, when EPP folded, by another press. Well, there is a much deeper story there and it's an unpleasant one, but let's not air any dirty laundry. Instead, let's celebrate!  Yes! For the tenth anniversary of its original publication, I have heavily revised This Rough Old World, making it leaner, faster, tougher and about 20k words shorter!

In the meantime, here's a new review of my novel AND OF COURSE, THERE WAS THE GIRL whose writer, the reader, seemed to enjoy it.  Since January 1st falls on a Wednesday, as did Christmas of course, I'm splitting the difference this year. Let's do a little wrap up for the year. This year I published the below: Short stories:
So twelve short stories works out to one a month averaging out. Not too bad. My story "Sleep Rough" published last year was also nominated for a Derringer Award. Sadly, I did not win, but who knows what next year will bring? Two crime stories and a supernatural mystery (one NOT featuring Azuma Kuromori) scheduled to be published this year haven't yet, so fingers crossed it won't be long into 2025 before they are. I also had published the first Sam Harrigan novel And Of Course, There Was the Girl back in the spring and just this month, a romance novel I wrote from someone else's notes was published (under a joint pen-name I chose)--Pucked Over.
There were some things I hoped to accomplish this year---find a publisher for my western novel GUN-SMOKE COUNTRY as well as a story collection and a mystery novella, for example---that I wasn't able to.
And on a personal level, this has been one of the most difficult--one of the worst--years of my entire life. But I'm still here and I'm still trying, so here's hoping 2025 will be even more productive. My crime story "The Good, the Bad, And the Other" is Guilty Flash's final story of the year!  |
